Mike Van den Tillaart and I did a quick morning tour of the Newmarket area
today. We did not find any White-winged Crossbills when we visited the North
Tract east of town, but the forest there is quite large and I think you have to
luck into them. On the way up to Keswick we had a male Northern Harrier
coursing low over a farm field just north of Mt. Albert Road on Kennedy. The
Ravenshoe flats in southwest Keswick yielded no Snowy Owls, but we enjoyed good
looks at a flock of 16 Snow Buntings.

On the way back to Newmarket we turned west from Leslie Street onto Holborn
Road and, about 1.5 kms east of Concession 2, we stopped to watch a light adult
Rough-legged Hawk hunting on the south side of the road. As we watched, the
distinctly low voice of a Common Raven drew our attention so we swung around
and took in excellent views of this large-beaked, wedge-tailed visitor
unhurriedly flying over the fields on the north side of the road.

We checked the vegetable fields of the Holland Marsh south of Bradford for
Snowy Owls but found nothing. Just before dropping Mike off at his place near
Bayvew and Elgin Streets in northeast Newmarket we had a small flock of six
Cedar Waxwings.

Hi Ontbirds
Birded along the Ottawa river this morning between Deschenes Rapids and
Remic Rapids. There was still a good variety of gulls near the Champlain
Bridge including 1 adult Lesser Black-backed, 11 Glaucous, 2 Iceland, 175+
Great Black-backed and 250+ Herring Gulls. The male Barrow's Goldeneye was
observed at Remic Rapids.
On Feb.1st, 2 Bohemian Waxwings were present at Remic Rapids feeding in
the Buckthorn and an adult Peregrine Falcon was observed eating a Mallard
near Deschenes Lookout.
If you require additional information, please email me privately.
                                    good birding
