As if to brighten a wintry January day, a male Red-winged Blackbird was at our
feeder in Overbrook (Queen Mary Street) today (9 January) at noon. Sunflower &
black nijer seed was all that was on the menu.

  Good winter listing!

OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE SUNDAY FEBRUARY 29 AT 10:30 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A week of sun and milder temperatures made for more comfortable
birding conditions.

A Bald Eagle was seen at Britannia on the 28th and 4 were seen
from Steel Line Rd along the Eardley escarpment in the Gatineau
Hills on the 29th. A juvenile Golden Eagle was reported from
Steel Line as well the same day.

An adult male Cooper's Hawk was seen on the 25th on the Westboro
area and a Sharp-shinned Hawk has been hunting at feeders on
Cumberland Ridge Rd.

Remarkably absent for most of the winter were American Kestrels.
One was finally spotted at Hurdman Park along Riverside Drive at
Hink's Lane on the 25th. A Peregrine Falcon was seen in Aylmer
the same day and an adult male Peregrine was seen several times
during the week, hunting pigeons in the Carlington area.

Two Wild Turkeys were in the area of Leitrim and Earl Armstrong
Rd, south of the International Airport on the 24th and one has
been roosting every night for at least two weeks in a large tree
along Old Montréal Rd, opposite the service entrance to the
Camelot Golf course. And one the group of 4 turkeys at the Duck
Club feeders on March Valley Rd near Riddell Rd is continuing to
practice his trick of leaping up and knocking seeds out of the
feeder. The culprit was photographed on the 28th.

Several reports of owls came in during the week including single
Great Horned Owls; one hunting along Leitrim near Limebank and
also one in the Britannia Woods. A white male Snowy Owl was seen
on the 28th along Eagleson Rd, south of Brownlee, at the hydro
towers. Another Snowy was on County Rd 9 south of Plantagenet on
the 26th. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL, west of Almonte, was most
recently reported on the 23rd, near 840 Old Union Hall Rd. Barred
Owl sightings were reported from Vanier Rd at Kilroy Cres south of
Pink Rd in Aylmer on the 27th and at the Jack Pine Trail near the
main feeder on the 18th and 23rd. Up to 6 Short-eared Owls are
still present along Earl Armstrong Rd. A Northern Saw-whet was a
surprise on the 25th in the cedar hedge on Promenade Cres in
Aylmer.

On the 26th, a Carolina Wren was singing at 127 Catherine St in
the village of St Isidore, east of Ottawa. Several American
Robins, which may have been present all winter, were active in the
Clyde Ave woods on the 27th and 28th. Flocks of Bohemian Waxwings
continue to be reported from many locations.

A White-throated Sparrow appeared in a backyard in the Carlington
area on the 26th. A female HOARY REDPOLL is still a regular at
the Hilda Rd feeder, most recently seen here on the 29th, and a
single Pine Siskin was singing in the cedar woods along Leitrim Rd
south of the airport on the 27th.

Thank-you. Good birding.
