The Atikokan Chaffinch has not been seen all day May 8. A weather change came through last night and this morning all the White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows present yesterday had moved on, apparently taking the Chaffinch with them. I will continue to watch for it the next few days and will advise if it reappears. This is Chris Lewis reporting. Since May 3rd, a nice movement of birds has occurred into our area, with most species right on time, a few "specials" and early arrivals, as well as a few lingerers. A GREAT EGRET was most recently reported on the Rideau River opposite Billings Bridge on the 4th, a Greater White-fronted Goose was still coming into the large quarry pond at Moodie Drive south of Trail Rd. on the evening of the 3rd, a very late Snow Goose and a Cackling Goose were at this pond along with 13 spp. of waterfowl including 6 Ruddy Ducks on the 6th, and a BARNACLE GOOSE of unknown origin was found among a small number of Canada Geese at the southwest corner of Trim Rd. and Wall Rd. the same day. At least 15 Snow Geese were seen at the St-Isidore sewage lagoons on the 3rd, along with 3 Red-breasted Mergansers. A migrating Loggerhead Shrike was seen briefly but well, perched and then flying north over Huntmar Dr. near the bridge over the Carp River on the 7th, and the LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH at the Waterfall Trail below the MacKenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park was still present on the morning of the 7th. A Green Heron was seen on the Rideau River near Carleton University on the 3rd, a single Gray Partridge was near the corner of Regimbald and Dunning Rds. on the 6th, and American Bittern, Virginia Rail, Sora and Common Moorhen are now being widely reported in small numbers. Twelve species of shorebirds have now been locally reported, including the following new arrivals since last weekend: Semipalmated Plover, Solitary Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Dunlin, and Wilson's Phalarope. Another Upland Sandpiper was was seen along Milton Rd. near Smith Rd. on the 6th. A Barred Owl and at least 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls were heard along Kettles Rd. near Munster Hamlet on the night of the 6th. New passerines this week (aside from the aforementioned rarities) were again reported from mainly the Britannia Conservation area, Gatineau Park, Vincent Massey Park, as well as other locations. These included Great Crested Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, House Wren, Wood Thrush, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Baltimore Oriole. Fourteen species of warblers have been noted in the Ottawa- Gatineau area to date, including Orange-crowned, Nashville, Chestnut-sided, Blackburnian and Common Yellowthroat.
