I spent Oct. 14 to 18 on Manitoulin photographing Sandhill Cranes. I helped
a bit with a count on October 15 that saw more than 4500 cranes fly into an
area of three lakes from Learmont Road in Carnarvon Township. This was the
highest count from one place since Chris Bell has been organizing the
counts.

For anyone wishing to see Sandhill Cranes in Ontario this is something to
keep in mind for next year. The fall colours, spectacular scenery and
large numbers of birds feeding in the fields during the day and flying in
and out of roost sites in the early moring and back in the evening makes a
very rewarding autumn trip.

Manitoulin Island is an under-appreciated birding location.
