Highlights of reports received March 15 through March 22 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include EURASIAN WIGEON, GR. WHITE-FR. GOOSE,
TREE SWALLOW, EASTERN PHOEBE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and PURPLE SANDPIPER.
March 18 in the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, a EURASIAN
WIGEON was found on the west side of Oakfield-
Albion Road, just south of Oak Orchard Creek. To the north side of
the creek, 2 GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE were located in a distant flock of
CANADA GEESE.
In the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, 192 TUNDRA SWANS, at the
canal crossing Meadville Road, over 200 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and at
Cayuga Pool on Route 77, BALD EAGLE on nest. On Tonawanda Creek in the
Town of Royalton, two pair of SWANS, reported as TRUMPETER SWANS. And
in Clarence, on Stage Road, a likely escaped or feral RUDDY SHELDUCK,
among CANADA GEESE, AMERICAN WIGEON and MALLARDS.
March 17, 2 TREE SWALLOWS at Dunkirk Harbor, and EASTERN PHOEBE on
Harmon Hill Road in Pomfret.
Also March 17, to the east of the region, a wintering BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE was reported again at Point Breeze, on Route 98 at Lake
Ontario. Also in the Lake Ontario Plains recently, SANDHILL CRANE over
Wilson. At Golden Hill State Park, 3 LONG-EARED OWLS and a
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. 17 TUNDRA SWANS and 27 SNOW GEESE on
Niagara-Orleans Countyline, and 5 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 2 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS on Marshall Road in Yates.
March 20 on Goat Island, above Niagara Falls, a PURPLE SANDPIPER off
the Three Sisters Islands. On the lower Niagara River at the Lewiston
Docks, 19 LITTLE GULLS among abundant RING-BILLED GULLS and very few
BONAPARTE'S GULLS. On the west branch of the Niagara River off Grand
Island, 8 TUNDRA SWANS, over 9000 CANVASBACKS, 700 REDHEADS, 420
COMMON MERGANSERS and 20 AMERICAN COOT.
From Lake Erie, on the 21st, an apparent record March count for WOOD
DUCKS - 65, at the mouth at of Cattaraugus Creek. At Dunkirk Harbor,
an ICELAND GULL, plus COMMON LOON, 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 20 SURF
SCOTERS and a flyover MERLIN.
Also this week - 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS on the Statler Building in
downtown Buffalo.
