Today Margaret Bain and I birded Wolfe Island. Highlights: 10 short-eared owls between 4 and 4:30 pm on the south side of Highway 96 near 2nd line (just east of the "Ferry to Simcoe Island" sign). They came from the north in a group at 4 o'clock (none were there earlier), perhaps from a roost on Simcoe island; they were close enough to hear repeatedly; 2 snowy owls on the 5th line between Baseline and Reed's Bay Road ( the first one found by Jean Iron who phoned us - good one Jean); 28 rough-legged hawks! (10 dark morph, 16 light, 2 not distinguished - both ends of island, but all the dark ones on the west end); 3 northern shrikes; 4 kestrels; 6 redtails ( all on east end of island); 1 pheasant; 75+ turkeys; 3 eagles, all adults; a group of robins; a small flight of snow buntings; 2 red foxes, 1 coyote, hundreds of white-tailed deer.
