There was also a Great Horned Owl on Peninsula C - I saw it from the tip of
Peninsula D (on which the yacht club is located), overlooking the narrow
entrance to Bay C where the EUWI was feeding, north of the bridge.
Also a Great Blue Heron was on Triangle Pond, and cells 1 and 2 had a
collection of all 3 kinds of mergansers for comparison.

Subject: Eu. Wigeon, Yes; Jan.3/04

> Hello Birdwatchers:
> It took some searching, but we saw teh Eurasion Wigeon on The "Leslie
Spit" this morning.
> It was NOT in the previous noted area ( Between bays B & C). I found in
a 'treed bay' 100 m before getting to the "Red Bridge" on the North
(Toronto) side of the spit paved road. The EUWI could be seen from the road
(( although some walked through the Equisetum sylvestris or horsetail
"marshy/forest" to get a closer view.
> The EUWI is with 6 or 7 American Widgeon, Ring-necked ducks, many
Redheads, Gadwalls, Hooded Mergansers, LT Ducks, Buffleheads, etc. It seems
to prefer 'chumming' food churned up by feeding Mute Swans, there were at
least 2 adults and 3 juvenile Swans churning bottom 'food' with their long
necks; the 'dabbling' ducks(EUWI,AMWI,Gadwalls, etc) fight one another in a
feeding frenzy for the churned food... thus it was difficult to spot at
times.
> Other birds of interest:
> Common Snipe ( past the gate on lake side)
> Sharp-shinned Hawk
> Green-winged Teal
> Hundreds of Common Goldeneyes
> Rafts of "Scaups", mostly Greater and Redheads.
> All 3 Mergies ( with dozens of Hooded)
> The EUWI is a male. To pick it out, look for a "lighter" small light
rufous/gray bodied duck with peachy buff shield/forhead and dull rusty face
(not as bright red as the Redheads).

> Directions to EUWI:
> Leslie Spit or Tommy Thompson Park is found at the foot of Leslie St
south of the Lakeshore Blvd in Toronto, Take Gardner to East of Don Valley
> Parkway, exit onto Lakeshore and drive south to Leslie Spit. Park at the
base and walk 2 to 3 km to 100 m before the Red Bridge and look north.
> Note that, in the past, it also has been seen between bays B & C past
the 'red bridge'...first path north to bays.
