Hi All,

Tony Bigg convinced me to go atlassing this morning (I should have been
working) so we went up to "my" square at Gilmour, off Hwy 62, north of
Madoc. After Tony did some point counts, we decided to visit the adjacent
unclaimed square in Perth Region and were pleasantly surprised by a pair of
Red Crossbills. The Brown Creeper carring nesting material, Sora running
across the road and the fledged young Am. Black Ducks were nice too.

Directions to the middle of "nowhere"
>From Hwy 7 at Madoc go north on Hwy 62 (I believe there is construction
there so taking the Deloro Rd to Hwy 62 might be advisable.) Go up Hwy 62
to the Weslemkoon Lake Rd. (approximately 35 km) Go approximately 7.8 km
along the Weslemkoon Lake Rd., passing through the village of Gilmour and
the open part of Wadsworth Lake. There will be a neighbourhood watch sign
on the right and just past that there is an emergency house number sign on
the left that says "A-F 1569," turn RIGHT (east) here. There is no road
sign and the road is not marked on the Mapart Road Atlas. [You will know
you are on the right road because there is a sign at the top of the hill
that says something to the effect of "Unmaintained -Use at own
risk -Ministry of Natural Resources" Just past this there is the dump.]
>From the Weslemkoon Lake Rd you will be travelling approximately 10 km on
the MNR road. It is in very good shape and well used by people towing 4
wheelers, so if you stop, pull over. The crossbill were seen on the road
just past the east end of a nice beaver pond on the south side with a
visible lodge. It is the second large very visible pond on the right side
(GPS coordinates are 306353 /4968144). The Brown Creeper was seen at the
first pond and the Black Ducks and Sora at the large pond on the other side
of the road.
