To contact the Science Museum, call 896-5200. Highlights of reports received February 6 through February 12 from the Niagara Frontier Region include TUFTED DUCK, TURKEY VULTURE, and BALD EAGLES. The last report of the TUFTED DUCK on the Welland Canal in Port Weller, Ontario, was February 6. February 8, a TURKEY VULTURE was noted flying over the Peace Bridge from Fort Erie to Buffalo. BALD EAGLES have been very active on the upper Niagara River. Eight were reported at Strawberry Island on February 8, 5 at Navy Island on the 10th, and several BALD EAGLES have been seen daily on the ice off the Riverside section of I-190. Good viewing points for the Strawberry Island eagles - the boat launch on Aqua Lane at the end of Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda, and the circle drive at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island. To view Navy Island, the Eagle Overlook parking area on the West River Parkway of Grand Island. A BALD EAGLE has also been a regular in Dunkirk Harbor this winter. On February 8, the BOS field trip to the harbor reported 11 waterfowl species. Also February 8, an ICELAND GULL flew past Krull Park, on the Lake Ontario shore in Olcott. Large flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS with several LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been reported in the fertilized fields throughout the Lake Ontario Plains. Especially off Route 18 at Hurlburg (?) Road, Niagara-Orleans Countyline Road and Marshall Road. Also in the Town of Newstead on Hunts Corner Road, Salt Road in Clarence, and in Chautauqua County, flocks of 200 and 300 SNOW BUNTINGS on Van Buren Road. In the Town of Porter, February 11, NORTHERN SHRIKE and 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS on Braley Road. AMERICAN KESTREL on Porter Center Road and a SHORT-EARED OWL at the surprising time of 12:30 in the afternoon on Youngstown Road, east of Porter Center Road. February 7, around Tonawanda Island in North Tonawanda, 9 waterfowl species were highlighted by 30 LESSER SCAUP, 20 HOODED MERGANSERS and a RUDDY DUCK. An adult BALD EAGLE was also seen over the Niagara River from Tonawanda Island. Other reports this week - a SHARP-SH. HAWK lingering in a yard in Williamsville. HAIRY WOODPECKER at a suet feeder on Woodbridge Avenue in Buffalo. At an East Aurora feeder, 2 COMMON REDPOLLS with a flock of AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, plus a BROWN CREEPER. And, at least 5 MERLINS on UB Main Street Campus, including one perched in the trees in front of the Medical School Building facing Bailey Avenue.
