July 23 and 24, a MERLIN was found roosting on the University at Buffalo Main Street Campus, in the large cottonwood at Hayes Hall. This may be one of the MERLINS that winters on the campus, is probably the first July record of MERLIN in the BOS archives. During the evening on July 18, 27 GREAT EGRETS were counted returning to roost at the Motor Island heronry in the Niagara River between Tonawanda and Grand Island. By day, these egrets are apparently dispersing to feed not just on the Niagara River, but at many inland locations. In June, 21 GREAT EGRET nestlings at the heronry were marked with a red band, attached above their left "knee". Observers are asked to watch for this detail on any egret they might find. The Batavia Waste Water Plant has a unique set of waterfowl not found elsewhere in the region during the summer season. On July 20, highlights were NORTHERN SHOVELER, CANVASBACK, RING-NECKED DUCK, 10 HOODED MERGANSERS and 179 RUDDY DUCKS, plus 2 COMMON MOORHENS. Shorebirds are also beginning to accumulate at the plant, 7 KILLDEER, 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 34 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 15 LEAST SANDPIPERS. OSPREYS reports this week - In the Tonawanda and Iroquois areas, an adult and nestling on the Lewiston overlook platform, on the Woods Marsh platform and at Ring-necked Marsh. In Allegany State Park, active OSPREY nests along Route 17 at the park maintenance road and at Route 280. Also COMMON RAVEN along Route 17. In the Wolf Run area of Allegany, a family of BARRED OWLS, 5 ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS, SWAINSON'S THRUSH and 12 warbler species highlighted by 2 NORTHERN PARULAS with one fledgling, and a CERULEAN WARBLER, plus BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, CHESTNUT-S. WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BL.-THR. BL. WARBLER, BL.-THR. GREEN WARB., BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and HOODED WARBLER. Other reports this week - Breeding Bird Atlas work in the Orleans County Town of Ridgeway reported a VESPER SPARROW on Marshall Road just south of Mill Road, plus YELLOW-THR. VIREO, 5 HOODED WARBLERS and an INDIGO BUNTING feeding young. At Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island, 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 12 CASPIAN TERNS and 60 COMMON TERNS including adults feeding young. At Cayuga Pool in the Iroquois Refuge, 7 BLACK TERNS. On Sour Springs Road, 7 BOBOLINKS. In the Tonawanda Area, PIED-BILLED GREBE, LEAST BITTERN, GREEN HERON, BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERON, BALD EAGLE and SORA. And in North Buffalo, 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS over Woodbridge Avenue, and either a SHARP-SH. HAWK or a COOPER'S HAWK was seen feeding young at Depew and Vorhees Streets.
