I made the walk into the Richmond Fen, southwest of Ottawa last night. At 9:45 pm I heard the YELLOW RAIL, first reported on June 14th, ticking close to the railway tracks on the east side.

Other birds of note were two HERMIT THRUSHES and a CANADA WARBLER singing at dusk in the wet woods on the way in along the railway tracks. In the fen a MERLIN was seen at dusk, and several WILLOW FLYCATCHERS and an AMERICAN BITTERN were heard.

Directions: From Hwy 417 in Kanata, take Eagleson Road south to the village of Richmond. Turn west (right) onto Perth Road, drive throught Richmond, continue west for about 5 minutes and then turn south (left) on Munster Road. Follow Munster Rd. to the T-intersection with Kettles Road, then turn east (left) on Kettles and drive to where the railway tracks cross the road. Park nearby and walk north on the tracks through the wet woods for approximately 40 minutes to reach the centre of the fen, where the Yellow Rail was heard. These tracks are in use by trains and caution is advised.
