Tundra Swans and Sandhill Cranes at Aylmer WMA
April 6, 2003
Not surprisingly given the weather and the free food, there are still 800+
Tundra Swans at Aylmer WMA. Most are families with last year's
young. Most years there are only a few dozen swans lingering this late.
Two Sandhill Cranes have been present since at least last Thursday. Today
at 6:30 p.m. they were performing courtship flight-dances every so
often. Whether they are a pair about to breed or just juvenile birds
practising remains to be seen.
Also present were several dozen each of Black Ducks, Green-winged Teal,
American Wigeon and a few Northern Pintails.
Directions:
From Hwy 401 take #73 (Elgin Road which becomes Imperial Road in Elgin
County) south towards Aylmer. Make a left on Ron McNeil Line towards
Springfield and a right at Hacienda Road. Go south
straight to the 2nd entrance at the Ontario Police College to the Aylmer
Wildlife Management Area behind the Police College. Follow to viewing stand.
