what's your locale (LC_ALL, LANG, LC_MESSAGES, etc.) settings?
perhaps it might cause such make error, although I tryed and found no
error in some
environments (LC_ALL, LANG = ja_JP.UTF-8, da_DK.UTF-8, ja_JP.SJIS...).
add to this, I don't think libiconv or gettext causes this because
