Thank you 'D.E. Evans': the library I needed was xorg-dev. Which
wasn't even listed as a Debian dependancy.
I can (very happily) report that the Debian source package for bbkeys
0.9.0.orig compiles under Ubuntu and solves the problem

I've now got three versions of bbpager from the CVS archive, and none
of them seem to compile.
1) checkout -r bbpager_0_4_0 bbpager
/configure complains about missing make file in src/ directory.
2) checkout -f -r
