I figured out what happened. I had set up a second x-display accessible with alt/cntrl/F8. I was using that one without realizing it. I need to create an xclients- file for :1 matching the file of :0 Right now, I've gone back to :0 and Blackbox opened fine. I wouldn't have figured it out if Jan's message hadn't pointed me in the right direction to poke around in. Again, I appreciate your helpfulness and patience.
