BLFS should roll back Pango to 1.21.1 it built without complaint
and GTK-2.18.7 (as seen in last SVN BLFS I've downloaded) is happy with
it.

I only noticed this ticket now after creating tickets 3087 and 3088.
What is the status of this ticket? The reason I ask is that I'm working
on GNOME System Monitor atm.
