Check also how your fonts are configured and locale&encoding related
stuff as mentioned in X Window System Components chapter.

check the first line of your
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias file. It should look like -
fixed -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1
or
fixed -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-2
if you need different encoding.

It is basically divided into two separate stories, rpm format and driver itself.
Is the only way install rpm package, build rpm db and then install
with rpm (rpm pkg management is totaly useless for me)? Are the tools
like rpm2tgz
