Well, after five years of learning and loving LFS & BLFS, I'm taking the coward's way out and moving to a precompiled distro. I just can't get past this problem of Evolution locking up in the address book / calendar, and while I may or may not solve it with another few weeks of debugging and reinstalling, it long ago crossed the line from being fun to being a job. And, unfortunately, full functionality in Evolution is a critical need.
So... I went with Arch Linux. You don't get the fine granularity of compile-time configuration to your own preferences, but you do get to selectively install only those packages (and their dependencies) you want - which puts it miles (kilometers) ahead of the big name distros that give you the kitchen sink whether you want it or not. And when I don't like the way Arch installs something, I can still build from source without worrying that I will break some RPM's package database (or a future RPM will break my custom build). A billion thanks to the LFS & BLFS crew for your work - particularly Dan, DJ, and Randy for your patience answering questions that only get stupider as I get older. I'll be back the next time I get a hardware upgrade! -- Peter B.
