Try imagemagick's convert command if netpbm is too complicated. Other than
that, I'd be pretty interested whether you tried ocre, ocrad or gocr (of course
the latter accepts jpgs, so you wouldn't need pgm images) and what your actual
results were. My last tests weren't too successful

GIMP 2.2.8 can save images in in pgm format. Choose File->Save As, and
then click the "Select File Type (By Extension)" option, scroll down the
resulting list until
