Hi all,
does anyone have any idea why messages in Outlook Express would still say
unread, even after reading them and closing them out?
I've gone nutty trying to find the answer, so help would sincerely be
appreciated!
I even tried rebooting a couple of times to see if that would just reset

You might want to go to tools, (Control plus T then options, (press O) then
Control plus Tab to go to the tab that says read messages.
Now you should be at the tab that says
Mark messages read after displaying
If the checkbox is unchecked you may want to check it.

Try this. Go to the message list, look in the edit menu and find the mark
as unread choice. Hope this helps. Take care.

It sounds as though you could have messages collapsed, and Jaws is not
reporting it to you.
Try this:
While you have a message selected, but not open,press the right arrow key.
If the messages are set to group by conversation, this will expand the
thread to show the other messages,

If you check that box, that will tell Outlook Express to automatically mark
the message as, read,
after a time you specify by moving to the next tab and setting a time.
So, if you choose this option, you could end up with a list of messages
marked as read, when in fact, you haven't read
