My young friend beginning college has ethernet
ports to retrieve internet in her dorm room. However, she wants to convert
this to wirless. She is getting differing opinion on whether she needs a
router or modem to do this. Any ideas?

Here in Canada, you can get a router/modem, combined, I'm sure this is

first thing I would recommend doing is plugging the drive into
another computer so we can see for sure if its the drive or the
computer that's at fault (more than likely, its the drive, but
