Dear List ,

I thought I should feedback on how I solved a problem with Home networking.
Recently my Advent Netbook died on me and I had to replace it with an Acer.
I am pretty
happy with it though the keyboard is not quite as good as the Advent that
died on me. The biggest frustration was the inability to set up the Acer for
home networking. This was no problem with the Advent but seemed impossible
with the Acer.

Basically I could see the Acer from the Desktop but could not access files.
The Acer could see nothing on the network at all apart from itself.

To cut a long story short I became suspicious of the bundled MacAfee
software with came with the Acer. I went to theEset site and ran the MacAfee
uninstaller from there . I then installed Nod 32. As soon as I uninstalled
MacAfee the Acer could pick up on all the computers in the network and could
print through the network printer.

I now remember that a laptop I used to use which for years obstinately
refused to hook up to my home network also had MacAfee installed on it.

The moral of the story appears to be if you want to network your home PCS
you need to get rid of MacAfee and install something else. On the Advent I
had Avast which also allowed home networking and on my desktop I have AVG
Internet Security which is completely tolerant of home networking so it does
appear to be a MacAfee problem.
