From time to time I come across a certain file and have know clue what it
means or what it is for.
For instance, I received a PPS. file and have not a clue what it is.
If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

There is a site http://www.filext.com that has a database of file extensions
so hope that helps. Otherwise PPS is a Powerpoint presentation/slideshow.
