On both computers,make sure that the network name is exactly the same,
and make sure that each computer has a different description.
If you have at least one folder shared on both computers,they should see
each other, unless a firewall is blocking access.

Are you sure that you enabled file and printer sharing on computer #1 and
then shared at least one folder? With Vista, you can also run into
permission difficulties if you have different user names
