My disclaimer is I don't know squat about cane chairs, rebuilding them or wood working however I am pretty fair at repairing and resurrecting holes that are no longer strait or round. With that in mind, would it be possible to simply fit the appropriate diameter dowel in the broken out area

Also from my perspective of total ignorance of caning It seems to me that repairing holes by inserting dowels and re-drilling would leave a very thin wall next to the original breakout, and that this is where the pressure of the new cane will be maximum. Maybe we're all carrying speculation from
