Yes, 240volts sure packs a whack. I've been hit by it only once. Once is usually it for most. I must have been lucky and momentarily formed a minor pathway from active to earth, rather than become BBQ as part of a full circuit from active to neutral return. since then, I've never personally messed with anything more than a 9volt battery!
