Well Phil, I'm glad I decided to read the rest of my mail
before I wrote a response to your message, since it would have

If they simply do not take a charge at all, then they're probably old and/or
shorted and should be returned.
If they appear to charge and will play the machine, but not for very long,
then they're also old, probably been sitting uncharged on the shelf for years.
