That's the way I remember the click rule.
The body was 6 inches, and another 6 inches clicked out. Then you had the
extension rods that screwed on that I believe that came in 1 foot and maybe a 3
footer. I can't remember. It's been nearly 20 years since I had access to a
click rule.

my original click rule had only a 6 inch. It fit neatly inside the body of
the device.

I don't understand where there is a problem as you got it. Thread the three
1-foot extensions together, draw the sliding piece in the Click Rule main
piece out 4 inches and thread the 3 piece assembly into the main piece for
your 40 inches.
