Why do lines and characters often get spoken twice when I'm editing a
message? This happened as I replied to the last message, but not as I
compose this one. It makes navigation and proofreading difficult.

This sounds like a problem with an older version of Thunderbird and/or
Orca. I rarely if ever have the problem now, as most of these
repetitions are fixed in latest Thunderbird 52 and Orca 3.22.
