The links are numbered feature works just fine in the edition of elinks we
have on shellworld...for which I am thankful.
The Ubuntu shell dreamhost provides to its clients does not have elinks

links -html-numbered-links 1
or by using the menu:
View -> Html Options -> "Links are numbered"
