I don't know a huge amount about this issue, but from looking at the
KDE bug you initially linked, it appears the original issue was in
freedesktop. From looking at the update-desktop-database package's
website <http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/desktop-file-utils>,
it appears that in September a release was made which brought
chemical/ support to it.

Since that release was so recent, it's likely that most people are
running a version without chemical/ support. For example, Ubuntu's
Maverick repo contains version 0.16, and the fix was introduced in
0.17.

If I'm understanding the issue correctly, the good news is that when
0.17 is adopted by distros etc, the issue should be fixed (though the
change in the KDE bug, and any other similar changes, would need
reverting)...
