In case anyone hasn't been paying attention, BRL-CAD was accepted to
participate in the 2014 Google Summer of Code!

Our application went through with flying colors despite our ISP rebooting the
main server accidentally during the week of application reviews and going
completely dark a half hour before orgs were announced. I stubbed in a
temporary page but fortunately everything was restored back within a couple
hours (ugh). Regardless, we're a go!

That means we have a lot of work that needs to be done quickly now. The
project ideas page and virtual machine come to mind immediately. There are
several project ideas we've discussed that are not on the page and some on
there that need to be updated and removed. Please don't wait if you're willing
to make any updates or additions.

Mentors need to sign up on the Melange site and affiliate themselves with
BRL-CAD. Student selections this year will be heavily driven by mentor
interest, so please do engage and redirect students if there's an area you'd
like to see worked. I'm hoping that we get students for at least 2 possibly 3
web projects, 1 conversion, 1 interface, 1 rendering, and 1 or 2 core
infrastructure projects. Of course, entirely driven by student ability,
proposal quality, and mentors, but expecting 5-10 slots.

Someone needs to download the VM and (at a minimum) run "svn up" and upload an
updated image so everyone doesn't have to pull all our updates from the past
year.

A change or expansion this year, as compared to last year, is as I mentioned
earlier about collaborating with three other communities: OpenSCAD, STEPcode,
and LibreCAD. They will each be getting 1-2 slots depending on the number and
quality of applications received. I'm leaving it up to them to define project
ideas, but reusable or collaborative projects are the hope. Feel free to add
and expand on project ideas of your own that help bridge our communities (like
handing data over to LibreCAD when someone edits our 2D sketch primitive in
BRL-CAD, or creating a faithful OpenSCAD converter).

I'll be tackling changes to our app guidelines and requirements to accommodate
our parters and will then be working on adding several project ideas that I've
had in mind (and reorganizing them, they're a mess).

GSoC Students: if you're listening and haven't introduced yourself, don't be
shy. Forget about our ideas page and let us know what really interests you.
Welcome. ;)

Cheers!
Sean
