[BRLTTY] History of Brltty

What is the history of Brltty? I have to admit, it is an indispensable tool in my arsenal, but how did it all get started to end up as the wonderful program it is today? As a side note, how many of us use Brltty as our sole means of navigating in Linux? I hope this message isn't too off topic,
