Ok I solved it:
My copy of TeX-texify was corrupt.
I removed my installation of AUCTeX from the package manager (I don't
know if that was necessary)
I reinstalled using emacs interface: package-install (auctex 11.88)
I went piece by piece to see what was making the problem

installation from the package manager, and ran
emacs -Q
M-x package-install RET auctex
