Yep, it's definitely used inconsistently.

The Autoconf manual uses it as well for GNU, and some other strings,
and inconsistently, too.  libtool.texi is even fairly consistent in
using it for 'GNU'.  The texinfo manual even uses @acronym{GNU} as
example.

I'm really undecided on this question, I don't care what color this
shed gets, but please let's use just one color for the autotools at
least.  Do you have a rationale for eliminating @acronym?
