I get the same results with the latest mingw tools and on a debian box.
Debian:
GNU ld version 2.16.91 20060118 Debian GNU/Linux
gcc version 4.0.3 20060212 (prerelease) (Debian 4.0.2-9)

I would very much like to see ar being able to accept .a files.
In my opinion it should then extract all object files from the archive and add
them to the archive you're adding to.
Example:
ar rc libmore_objs.a more_obj1.o more_obj2.o
ar rc libtarget.a obj1.o obj2.o libmore_objs.a
would be

we found a problem with the .def file syntax in the GNU utilities.

Currently, we are modifying out build system to support the gcc compiler.

The problem here is that you are using the -M option to GCC. I don't know what
this option's meaning is for Microsoft's compiler, but for GCC, it means:
`-M'
