This is related to the expand comand's behaviour when you use it to change tab to spaces, and specifying two spaces per tab.
The point is, the spaces inserted for a 2 spaces/tab command are actually the same as having specified 1 space/tab. And the difference is observed when you specify 3 spaces/tab command, that expand performs right. Comands issued to see the bug: expand -t1 hints.txt | cut -b1-9 expand -t2 hints.txt | cut -b1-9 expand -t3 hints.txt | cut -b1-9 Attached are the files for testing the bug: hints.txt is a plain text file, and expand-bug.txt is a comand line record, so you can see what I saw.
