Follow-up Comment #1, bug #24979 (project gnustep):
Are you sure that what you report as the expected behaviour is what is
happening in Cocoa?
I am very sure that nibinstantiate gets called a lot later there. I can see
how the behaviour you describe is a lot easier to implement correctly and

I agree. I would still like to understand what they're doing and why.
Naturally the implementation might change over time. There's obviously more
work to do on this front.
I intend on getting through a lot of it in the coming weeks.

Follow-up Comment #1, bug #24985 (project gnustep):
I'm not sure what the issue is here, and what I'm remembering may not be
relevant to loading from a nib, but we should be able to change the menu
layout (from horizontal to vertical and back) dynamically ... as you need to
do that when

Just to clarify... this is so that make install will still go to LOCAL, but
that there is another way to install things into SYSTEM that's equally as
easy.

I second this request. Yes, the new way of compiling isn't that complicated,
but I am very lazy and I recompile GNUstep about twice a day.
I vote for make sysinstall.

Did you check that your double conversion also works with a return value of
NSTerminateLater?
You see, I am too unsure what a conversion to BOOL actually does. (Being
spoiled by Java day time programming, I mistrust a compiler) Most likely it

How about:
GNUSTEP_INSTALLATION_DOMAIN=SYSTEM
make install
...
make install
make install
ie, you set the domain once, rather than every time (I assume that would
work).
Alternatively, (what I plan to do), you just use 'make install'
