did everything the docs tell you to, grub is looking for
$(root)/boot/grub/{stage1,stage2}. It is possible that $(root) for
you is /boot,

Trying to compile on the hurd yielded some error messages during the build.
I was using the CVS version which compiles fine under GNU/Linux.
I have included a snipped output of make. I can send the whole file if
needed.

Your Makefile seems to be quite broken. Didn't you run (an invalid
version of) automake yourself?
I ran 2.13 on both the hurd and the linux box (both are debian systems).
Do one still need to apply the patch to autoconf?

automake. As for automake, you need to use a certain version hacked by
me, since the CVS version is too buggy (my version is also buggy,
though).
Either way, they are still both the same versions. I passed the exact
