I can't find any tip about the good xpm format to use with grub, seems it needs some
special format. Nothing in the mailing lists nor the man or the infodoc, someone can
help ???

I have the same problem. Luckily I tried this on a separate disk and
that cannot be booted anymore. But I can mount that disk as a slave
and copy files from/to it. I would love to boot from it again.
fdisk, fsck, grub.conf all look good.
