hmm...
I tried to reinstall grub with
grub-install /dev/hda

now, the 'grub-set-default' command works proper. But not the savedefault
command in the grub-console.
You can type 'savedefault' at the grub-console while you are online with
linux?

I mean:
$ grub
<loading...>

    GNU GRUB  version 0.97  (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

 [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.  For the first word, TAB
   lists possible command completions.  Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
   completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> savedefault <-enter

does this work for you?
I still have the same error. Unrecognized command :(
