I've seen the same thing (different machine and motherboard) but haven't had chance to investigate. One thing I did notice was that the bios was saying 255 sectors. There seemed to be no way to change this in the bios and now way to tell fdisk that there are more than 255 sectors. I haven't had chance to try the geometry option to grub (didn't know about this option when I was trying to get grub working) (N.B.
