I have not use Grub with a serial console, but does it use the same stage ? You have a nice menu or just a prompt ? Do you see the Message with Grub loading ? In fact I have differents configurations : a NFS root one, a normal boot which uses the internal linux on the PC104, and an autonomous one. The last one is only uses in special condition (not for dev, only lauch a internal developped program) and that's the one that take about 10 seconds to boot. In fact, it uses a compressed initrd which contains a linux kernel, a busybox (for shell and other commands), a few scripts and a program with needed library.
