Grub 1.98 in Mandriva cooker; grub2 is chain loaded from grub1. /boot
on separate ext2 partition, core.img includes only ext2.mod, the rest
of system is on reiserfs, ext4 and partially LVM.
Load GRUB2, start edit menuentry, position on linux line, enter init=/bin/TAB
System silently resets.

Could you also try:
ntldr /ntldr
instead of chainloader?
I went in to Grubs command line but couldn't figure out how to call or run
ntldr /ntldr. If you can give fuller instruction I will try again.
