Well, I thought about this. However, I don't really want to introduce a
temporary target then deprecate it again. Also, this problem has existed in
virtually every version of GNU make and no one mentioned it until late last

Wouldn't it be better to (temporarily) add a special target that triggers the
correct behavior? It seems kind of backward to deprive people of a bug fix
just because some influential project has a buggy build system.
