ESA-2016-157: EMC ScaleIO Multiple Vulnerabilities

EMC Identifier: ESA-2016-157
CVE Identifier: CVE-2016-9867, CVE-2016-9868, CVE-2016-9869
Severity Rating: CVSS v3Base Score: See below for individual scores

Affected products:
EMC ScaleIO versions before 2.0.1.1

Summary:
EMC ScaleIO version 2.0.1.1 contains fixes for multiple security
vulnerabilities that could potentially be exploited by malicious users to
compromise the affected system.

Details:
EMC ScaleIO versions before 2.0.1.1 could be vulnerable to the following
vulnerabilities:

• Privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2016-9867)
A low-privileged local attacker may be able to modify the kernel memory in the
SCINI driver and may achieve code execution to escalate privileges to root on
ScaleIO Data Client (SDC) servers.
CVSSv3: 7.8 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H)

• Denial-of-service vulnerability via IOCTL calls (CVE-2016-9868)
A low-privileged local attacker may cause a denial-of-service by generating a
kernel panic in the SCINI driver using IOCTL calls which may render the ScaleIO
Data Client (SDC) server unavailable until the next reboot.
CVSSv3: 4.7 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H)

• Denial-of-service through configuration API (CVE-2016-9869)
Incorrect permissions on the SCINI driver may allow a low-privileged local
attacker to modify the configuration and render the ScaleIO Data Client (SDC)
server unavailable.
CVSSv3: 4.7 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H)

Resolution:
The following EMC ScaleIO release contains resolutions to these vulnerabilities:
• EMC ScaleIO version 2.0.1.1

EMC recommends all customers upgrade at the earliest opportunity. For those
that are unable to upgrade we recommend customers to change the access
permission to 600 as follows:

For each SDC, please execute the following SHELL command:
chmod 600 /dev/scini

                Notes:
1. This should be executed “as-is” (do not add anything else to the
command).
2. This command should be executed after every reload of the SDC or after
reboot
3. Once upgraded to 2.0.1.1. it is all set and no need to use this
workaround.
