*Job Description:*

·         The Systems Engineer Lead is responsible for leading and
supporting the technical infrastructure and platforms that supports
Progressive's business systems.

·         Leads others in Evaluating, recommending, installing, configuring,
developing, implementing, supporting, and maintaining complex operating
systems, and hardware and software components, which may includes leading
projects to maintain and enhance assigned platforms.

·         Coordinates and maintains all environment changes to the systems,
and is responsible for ensuring that the availability of the supported
environment meets negotiated service level agreements, including business
continuity in the event of a disaster.

·         Responsibilities include guiding others in the development and
on-going maintenance of complex utility software, diagnostic software,
operating system components and interfaces, software tools, system
monitoring tools, and management reporting. Responsibilities may also
include supporting and maintaining file maintenance routines,

·         position control languages, program libraries, and servers.

·         May work with hardware and software vendors.

·         May work with business areas regarding performance and capacity
planning activities.

·         Uses skills and knowledge of an advanced and seasoned professional
in the area of software system analysis and architecture, and operating
systems.

·         Has a wide range of experience with software system analysis and
operating systems.

·         Works on problems of diverse scope and high complexity where
analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

·         Guides others in software system analysis and operating systems
projects of large scale, exercising exceptional judgment and creativity in
electing methods and techniques to obtain solutions, and escalating only the
more unusual and/or unique software system and operating system issues when
necessary.

·         Leads efforts for improving processes and procedures, and
functions as an escalation point and/or training resource for less
experienced staff members.

*DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (% of Time):*

Designs, installs, configures, and supports various hardware and software
operating environments and infrastructures.

Evaluates Progressive-specific requirements and modifies solutions. Develops

special utilities to meet Progressive's environmental requirements.



·         Responsibilities may include following vendor-supplied processes
to install base solutions and investigate configurable components. May also
develop infrastructure and installation diagrams.

·         Determines compatibility of new components with all other hardware
and software components and applies any required maintenance.

·         Follows standard implementation elevation and testing processes to
ensure interoperability with other hardware, software, and application
components.

·         Works with other areas within IT to validate functionality and to
provide cross training prior to production implementation.

·         May assist with the installation of hardware components, which
includes the placement, power, communication, and updating of asset
inventory.

·         May deploy, configure and support servers, which could include
building and supporting request generated systems that interface with Notes.
May connect to remote servers to interrogate files and logs, and perform
Problem Determination and Problem Source Identification.

·         May stage and elevate new code to new servers, which may include
working with other IT areas to resolve issues with source codes and
applications, and to verify functionality.

·         Develops tools to help monitor and analyze the performance of
complex operating systems, and hardware and software components.

·         Responsibilities may include collecting test data, interpreting
test data and making recommendations for improvements, and developing
performance analysis tools and

·         reports.

·         Monitors the infrastructure to identify areas for improvement and
eliminate areas that are susceptible to failure. Makes configuration changes
to system infrastructure as needed to ensure service level agreements are
met.

·         May function as a key resource for large-scale software system
analysis projects.

·         Works with Project Management Offices and other areas within IT to
define project tasks, estimate and coordinate work efforts between multiple
groups, resolve or escalate issues, provide status updates on assigned
deliverables, and test and implement solutions.

·         May provide input to project cost benefit analysis.

·         Coordinates and maintains environment changes, which includes
gathering requirements for iteration changes, and procuring hardware (i.e.,
new or used servers) and software for new projects and infrastructure
changes. Establishes test environments and monitors the systems to determine
sizing.

·         Resolves environment problems due to changes. Creates and
maintains diagrams of the environments.

·         Follows established Problem and Change Management processes and
procedures, and makes

·         recommendations for improvements as needed.

·         Troubleshoots and repairs any infrastructure defects that affect
system (i.e., mainframe and SAN environment) performance and availability
without disrupting production. May respond to users regarding abnormal
system operations.

·         Participates in the business recovery and continuity processes,
which may include training on recovery processes, making changes to
processes as necessary, testing processes, and exercising the processes.

·         May generate and distribute system activity and status reports.

·         Validates all supported production processes.

·         Develops processes, tools, and techniques to optimize system
availability and readiness. Prepares and maintains documentation of
processes, which may include creating documentation for new processes.

·         Provides support, training, and mentoring to team members,
including less experience team members and customers from the business
areas.

·         May assists with the implementation of attached servers and
storage connectivity requests. May assist in the placement of new storage
equipment.

·         May support the lab environment, which may include frequent server
moves, storage adds/moves, and testing of new hardware or code. May oversee
data center staff in the placement of servers, the application of power and
communications, and updating of

·         asset inventory.

·         May participate in budget discussions, which could include
discussions regarding system infrastructures and servers.

·         May work with hardware and software vendors as needed to resolve
issues and maintain support relationships.

·         May load operating systems files and programs and the application
files. Applies operating system maintenance and security patches.

·         May verify successful daily and weekly backups. May run staging
jobs for the mainframe, and restore data using the mainframe or client
server environments.

·         Monitors developments in the IT industry, and makes
recommendations for new technologies to keep current infrastructures updated
to necessary standards of performance and reliability.

*KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:*

·         Education Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in an Information
Technology, or related discipline, which could include Computer Science,
Software Engineering, or Math. In lieu of a degree, related work experience
will be accepted.

·         Work Experience Requirements: Must have at least 8-10 years of
related work experience with operating system hardware and/or software and
components in a large IT environment with many categories of devices,
infrastructures, and operating systems. Experience could include mainframe
and/or distributed

·         environments.

·         Must have a strong understanding of all areas in an IT
environment, with the technical capability to use standard computer
interfaces, operating system components, utilities, production schedulers,
scripting programming languages, application programming languages, and
large system environment hardware components (i.e., CPU, disk, and tape
technologies).

·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability
to interact effectively with others, which could include levels of
management and external vendors.

·         The ability to work in a team-oriented environment and
independently organize work resources from current team or other teams to
solve technical problems. Must demonstrate an ability to lead others through
change.

·         Excellent organization skills with the ability to work on multiple
projects and/or assignment simultaneously.

·         The ability to support department goals that align with current
and future Company objectives and initiatives.

·         Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to find successful
resolutions for complex issues, escalating those that require management
involvement, when necessary.

·         Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with tight
deadlines and changing priorities.
