I have one of the 590s models and love it. What sealed the deal for me
was the good ratings it gets for the receive from sherwood. Also direct
plug and play to the PC for digital modes and rig control with no
additional interface (like a rigblaster) required.

Good morning Bvarc! Just curious if anyone else is having a hard time
with reception from the 146.94 repeater... Seems like it has been really
weak lately and I'm trying to figure out if it is my mobile setup or the
repeater itself. This morning on the way to work Austin was coming in
stronger
JP,
First of all, congrats on the General upgrade!
My first HF rig was a Yaesu FT-450 and it proved to be a great starter
radio. Solid performance, simple and inexpensive. Another one might be
the Icom IC-718 or the Kenwood TS-480.
Naturally buying used comes with some inherent risk, but th
Thanks for sharing that experience Bill; it will prove valuable to others
who may be experiencing similar issues.
Like Rick, I've never had an issue with Comcast (I also have Blast!
service but do use their "junk" modem.) Maybe it is a difference in the
state of repair of the infrastructure in
I had done something similar at my former qth to make 450 ohm ladder
line. My solution used UV resistant PVC conduit and UV resistant wire
ties. I drilled holes at the prescribed spacing through the conduit
(perpendicular to the axis of the conduit). I ran the wires through and
the put the wire
One quick follow-up; at my current qth, I took a leftover spacer and
heated it up with a heat gun and flattened it. Drilled two holes and used
it as a center insulator for my 80m doublet. It has been up in the air
now for 3-1/2 years with no issues...

Michael,
Try adding another 5 to 10 feet of ladder line. I had a similar issue
with my 80m doublet. After adding just a bit more, it was able to find a
match across all bands.
Just one of the drawbacks of not having dedicated resonant antennas for
each band!

Doesn't the old saying go "It is easier to ask for forgiveness..."
I believe there is a review of this rig in the November QST. I'm in the
same boat; buying a rig like that could significantly shorten my lifespan!

Also check out www.antennaweb.org to enter your address and it will give
you an azimuth direction for each station for aiming your directional
antenna...

Rob,
I am using one of those Terk indoor amplified models that looks like a
little 4 or 5 element "curved" yagi. I have it in my living room pointed
out a South facing window and can pick up pretty much all the local
broadcasts. I live in Copperfield near Barker Cypress and FM-529...

Good morning everyone! On my commute in to work this morning, around
5:50am, I heard someone calling for AMMRON net check-ins on the WA5CYI
146.94 repeater... The net control callsign was KD5YOF if I recall
correctly. (whose QTH is Pineville, LA if I remember the call correctly)
I thought
The 31ft model is the one I have in use at my QTH with a remote auto tuner
installed at the base. Seems to work well from 40m and up. As a
comparison, I picked mine up at Houston amateur radio supply for $99...

Any idea if any of the other local clubs have kids day activities
planned? (I'm thinking of the possibility of a joint event to boost
participation... Very short notice to try to put together though...)

To see an example of a "simple", sturdy and surprisingly inexpensive design
take a look at the Arrow dual band j-pole or ground plane... Would be easy
to replicate but for the price would be easy to justify purchasing complete
as well. I recall that they got good reviews on eham, for what that is
In the past at a former QTH, I've used homebrew j-poles and c-poles (also
called a slim-jim) with good success although they were mono-banders. I
also used a diamond vertical.
When I moved to Houston however, I had to deal with HOA restrictions so I
ended up trying a discone antenna that I purchas
