$releases_ids was actually a string so all I had to do was replace
'array($release_ids)' with 'explode(",", $release_ids)'.

Ok, if I remember correctly, then you just need to change:
'Release.id' => array($release_ids)
into
'Release.id' => $release_ids
as $release_id is already an array!
