The UN Security Council Monday voiced concern about four days of cross-border
fighting between Cambodia and Thailand and said it would be willing to hold a
meeting on the dispute.

"Members of the council expressed great concern at the aggravation of the
tension on the border," said Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, the Brazilian
ambassador who is president of the Security Council for February.

The continuing Thai-Cambodian border dispute should be settled peacefully at
the bilateral level, Cambodia's ambassador to Thailand You Ay said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Couple of Love and Rival seminar on Tuesday morning, she said
people should not politicise the border issue. It should be addressed at the
bilateral level within the framework of the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary
Commission (JBC).

WASHINGTON — The United States called Monday for Thailand and Cambodia to show
restraint after four days of cross-border fighting but took no stance on Phnom
Penh's bid for UN involvement. The United States has "raised our concerns with
senior officials" in both Thailand and Cambodia, State Department spokesman
Philip Crowley told reporters. "We continue to urge both sides to exercise
maximum restraint and take all necessary steps to reduce tensions," he said.

Crowley said that the United States was "undecided" on whether the United
Nations should be involved after Cambodia called for urgent action by the
Security Council. "We are discussing the best way forward within the Council,"
Crowley said.
Brazil, the president of the Security Council for February, said that members
voiced "great concern" about the situation.

Thailand has called for a bilateral solution and criticized Cambodia over
"internationalization" of the conflict, according to diplomats. Each country
has accused the other of provoking the violence near the disputed 11th-century
Preah Vihear temple, which has claimed seven lives and displaced thousands.

DELANO (AP) — A California man attending a cockfight has died after being
stabbed in the leg by a bird that had a knife attached to its own limb.
The Kern County coroner says 35-year-old Jose Luis Ochoa was declared dead at a
hospital about two hours after he suffered the injury in neighboring Tulare
County on Jan. 30.
An autopsy concluded Ochoa died of an accidental “sharp force injury” to his
right calf.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ray Pruitt says it’s unclear if a delay in seeking medical
attention contributed to Ochoa’s death. Tulare officials are investigating, and
no arrests were made at the cockfight.
Cockfighting is a sport, illegal in the United States, in which specially bred
roosters are put into a ring and encouraged to fight until one is incapacitated
or killed.

The plague of fanaticism

What I write for the Sunday column usually hits me around 2am Saturday morning,
while standing in some god-forsaken nightclub, starring down at the bottom of a
whisky bottle, trying to find the meaning to life. Whisky bottles are
bottomless, I tell you, but that's neither here nor
there.http://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opinion/220087/the-plague-of-fanaticism
